Alessi introduces the iconic espresso makers 9090 and La conica in vivid original versions

To celebrate its centennial, Alessi treats design lovers to intriguing special editions: Richard Sapper’s espresso coffee maker 9090 and Aldo Rossi’s La conica are featured in the Alessi 100 Values Collection as previously unpublished original versions.

In the Alessi 100 Values Collection, the espresso coffee maker 9090 manico forato features an orange-red handle, and La conica manico lungo comes with light blue details.

UNIQUE, HIGH-QUALITY MOKA POTS have been among the most essential products of the Italian brand Alessi for many decades. Moka pots are also included in the Alessi 100 Values Collection, which was released to celebrate Alessi’s 100th anniversary.

Released during 2021 and 2022, the collection consists of 12 different projects, each presenting one of Alessi’s core values. The sixth project introduces previously unreleased versions of two very iconic and expressive stove-top coffee makers: 9090 by Richard Sapper and La conica by Aldo Rossi. The sixth part of the collection is titled the Research Lab.

“I consider Alessi to be an industrial research laboratory dedicated to a continuous mediation between the immensity of creative possibilities and the needs, or rather the dreams, of the public. Several hundred of the most stimulating designers of the various eras we have been through have worked with us. Their work is documented and preserved in our museum.

Two particularly interesting examples of this aspect of Alessi are the coffee makers – 9090 by Richard Sapper and La conica by Aldo Rossi – of which we present two unpublished ‘laboratory proofs’ from our archives”, Alessi’s president Alberto Alessi explains.

Richard Sapper aimed at designing products that are as long-lasting as possible – that’ why the espresso coffee maker 9090 manico forato is made entirely from steel.

Clad in red: espresso coffee maker 9090 manico forato

Designed by Richard Sapper and released in 1978, the espresso coffee maker 9090 was the first Moka pot in Alessi’s collection as well as the first Alessi item in the permanent collection of MoMA New York.

The new limited edition of the espresso coffee maker, 9090 manico forato, boasts an original, previously unpublished orange-red handle with a perforated inside to facilitate heat dispersion. Red was the only color Sapper regularly used in his objects, often to emphasize the mobile and intersecting parts of the products. This was also the case with the espresso maker 9090, which has an inventive closing system in the handle.

The new limited edition of the espresso coffee maker 9090 is available in two different sizes: a 3-cup model and a 6-cup model.

Richard Sapper (1932–2015) was not only a skilled designer but also a technical innovator whose designs include telephones, computers and even cars. Image: Richard Sapper Archives.

“I wanted to give this machine features that others don’t have, such as the ability to open it and wash it with one hand. I wanted to make better use of the heat, which is why it widens at the base. I didn't want to make a plastic handle because sooner or later they all end up burning and then you throw the coffee machine away. And I wanted to make a machine that didn't look like a coffeemaker... an espresso machine like that isn’t a coffeemaker: it’s a little steam engine!” Sapper once said.

Born in Germany and settled in Milan in the 1950s, Sapper is known not only as a designer of Alessi’s kitchen items but also of many technical devices, such as Lenovo’s ThinkPad laptops. During his career, Sapper won altogether 11 Compasso d’Oro awards.

The espresso coffee maker La conica manico lungo resembles a house with a conical roof.

La conica manico lungo draws from architecture

Designed by architect Aldo Rossi and originally published in 1983, La conica does not look like the most typical Moka pot either. A combination of different geometric shapes, La conica was named after its conical top. The stainless steel pot has a base made of copper, an excellent conductor of heat.

The model published in the Alessi 100 Values Collection is, in fact, the very first version of La conica. Before its release in 1983, the design was modified to suit the requirements of mass production. The new special edition, La conica manico lungo, is easy to distinguish because of its light blue knob and handle, as well as the handle’s horizontal shape, which was inspired by ancient Italian cuccume pots.

La conica manico lungo features a quick-heating copper base and a light blue handle and knob.

Aldo Rossi (1931–1997) had a meritorious career in the fields of architecture as well as product design. Image: Giuseppe Pino.

Aldo Rossi’s architectural background is clearly visible in La conica’s design – the pot is like a narrow conical-roofed house in miniature size. One of the most significant Italian architects of his time, Rossi is famous for his unique style based on primary geometric forms and the use of abstraction and reduction. Rossi was the first Italian architect to win the prestigious Pritzker Architect Award.

Smart and Green - BLUETOOTH MESH: WHAT IS IT?

While the classic Bluetooth is known to all since the exchange of music via smartphones, its colleague, the Bluetooth MESH remains a little in the shadows. Yet it offers a number of endless possibilities. That's why we decided to integrate this technology into our product line. Stölzle Lausitz - New glass ranges at the AMBIENTE

The German glass manufacturer Stölzle Lausitz will be presenting itself at the international consumer goods fair AMBIENTE from February 7th to 12th, 2020 in Frankfurt am Main. At the well-known and proven location at booth D23 in hall 4.2, visitors can expect some new products this year.

Stölzle Lausitz presents its new stem glass series STARlight, which is classic at first sight, but trend-setting at first touch. The special feature of the new series is the thickness - specifically the fineness of the glass. For example, the stem has a diameter that is about ten percent smaller than that of conventional machine made glasses. And the goblet also has a noticeably thinner wall thickness compared to other glasses from machine production. In this way the STARlight series combines lightness with extraordinary elegance. They are perfect for high end gastronomy, 5-star hotels and innovative wine bars. They exude elegance and exclusivity with a high degree of functionality. They also include the usual features of Stölzle glasses being dishwasher safe with a high breakage resistance making them ideal for both professional and home dining.

Another novelty is the HIGHLIGHT series, which comes up with a completely new glass concept: a new technique is hidden in the glass base, which illuminates the stem of the glass after lifting and thus provides a particularly atmospheric effect. The glass lights up until it is switched off again. The light is reactivated immediately by lifting the glass again. The high stem, the seamless transition to the chalice and the slim shape of the goblet ensure that the glasses have an appearance which also lend elegance to special occasions, even before the lighting effect. In addition to the sparkling wine glass, the highlight concept also includes a white wine glass and the champagne glass L’AMOUR with satin hearts on the goblet.

The jury of the Tableware International Awards also honoured the innovative glass concept by placing the highlight champagne glass on the podium and thus among the three best products in the “Fine Glassware” category at the Awards of Excellence 2020.

The German Design Award is one of the most renowned design awards with great national and international importance. The German Design Council awards the prize for innovative products and projects in various categories. The quality of the award is ensured by a top-class international jury.

Stem Zero

Some look tough but are so fragile.
Some look fragile but are tougher than any other…

What if it was possible to create a glass so fine, so elegant, so exquisite, that it could almost make you feel as if it didn't exist?

That nothing came between you and the enjoyment of your favorite wine.

Our designers at NUDE asked themselves the same question, but after a huge amount of work and dedication have come up with the answer

We call it... Stem Zero with Ion Shielding Technology

Nothing comes between me and my wine...

Stem Zero Ion Shielding

The lip is gossamer-thin, the bowl delicate, the stem precise. The lightness of Stem Zero focusses all attention on the senses.

Stem Zero is so light that it creates the sensation of weightlessness, allowing you to savour the aroma and taste in a way that until now was considered unimaginable

The Solution

Ion Shielding Technology

By experimenting with strengthening techniques and suppressing the micro-fissures that cause glass to crack, NUDE has employed a special surface modification technology, based on an ion-exchange process.

These larger ions, incorporated into the glass’ surface structure and replacing the smaller ions which cause strains, form compressive stress and make the glasses more robust and more suitable for everyday use.
